Branded with the letter “A” on her chest, abortionist Hester Smith works tirelessly to buy her son’s freedom from prison. Violence and greed surge around her, and Hester must make unimaginable sacrifices. An epic blend of song and story, Suzan-Lori Parks’s radical take on The Scarlet Letter is a forceful protest against the suffering of innocent people caught in the grip of the corrupt and powerful.
Fucking A features music direction by Liam Bellman-Sharpe, scenic design by Patti Panyakaew, costume design by Caroline Tyson, lighting design by Ankit Pandey, sound design by Joe Krempetz, projection design by Doaa Ouf, dramaturgy by Gabrielle Hoyt, technical direction by Alex Theisen, fight and intimacy direction by Kelsey Rainwater and Michael Rossmy, and stage management by Aura Michelle.
The cast includes Mariah Copeland, Michael Allyn Crawford, Giovanna Drummond, Sufiyan Farmer, Ariyan Kassam, Augustine Lorrie, Jahsiah Mussig, Anna Roman, and (Vin) Tré Scott.
This production includes explicit language; simulated violence; brief and partial nudity; simulated sexual assault; descriptions of torture; use of stage blood; and themes surrounding death, incarceration, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, sex work, infertility, and class oppression.
